LESSON 02 — RESPONSIBLE CREDIT BUILDING

Your Credit Score Is Fixable

Step-by-step guide to disputing errors, building positive history, and reaching 700+ — for free.

🛡️ Your credit is your foundation. Build it strong. Protect it smart.

THE FOUNDATION OF GREAT CREDIT

5 Golden Behavior Traits

These 5 habits — practiced consistently — will raise your credit score faster than any shortcut.

01💳
35%

Pay On Time — Every Time

Payment history is 35% of your credit score — the single biggest factor. Set up autopay or calendar reminders. Even one missed payment can drop your score 50–100 points and stay on your report for 7 years.

02📊
30%

Keep Utilization Below 30%

Credit utilization (how much of your available credit you use) makes up 30% of your score. If your limit is $1,000, keep your balance under $300. Under 10% is ideal for the highest scores.

03🕰️
15%

Let Accounts Age

The length of your credit history accounts for 15% of your score. Keep your oldest accounts open — even if you rarely use them. Closing old accounts shortens your average age and can hurt your score.

04🔍
10%

Limit Hard Inquiries

Every time you apply for new credit, a hard inquiry is recorded — this accounts for 10% of your score. Space out applications. Multiple inquiries in a short window signal financial desperation to lenders.

05🏦
10%

Diversify Your Credit Mix

Having a healthy mix of credit types — credit cards, installment loans, auto loans — makes up 10% of your score. You don't need every type, but responsibly managing more than one kind shows lenders you can handle credit.

7-Step FCRA Process

01📄

Get Your Credit Reports

Visit AnnualCreditReport.com — the only FREE official source. Get all 3 bureaus: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion.

02🔍

Review Your Reports Carefully

Look for errors: wrong name, wrong address, accounts you don't recognize, incorrect balances or payment history.

03✉️

Dispute Inaccuracies in Writing

Send a dispute letter to the bureau reporting the error. Include copies of supporting documents. Keep everything.

04⚖️

Bureaus Must Investigate

Under the FCRA, credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate your dispute. This is your legal right.

05

They Must Correct or Remove Errors

If the information can't be verified, it must be removed. Inaccurate negative items must be corrected.

06📋

Follow Up

Check your reports 30–45 days after disputing. If the bureau doesn't respond, file a complaint with the CFPB.

07🌱

Build Positive Credit Habits

Pay on time, keep utilization low, don't open too many accounts. Consistent good habits rebuild your score.

⚖️ YOUR FCRA RIGHTS

Free credit report from each bureau annually
Dispute inaccurate or incomplete information
Know when your credit is used against you
Access your credit file
Seek damages for FCRA violations

💡 PRO TIPS

Always dispute in writing — not by phone
Send letters via certified mail with return receipt
Keep copies of everything you send and receive
Be patient — the process takes 30–45 days
Monitor your credit monthly after disputes

🧠 REMEMBER

The FCRA is your tool. Credit bureaus work for you — not the other way around. Know your rights and use them.

Your credit is your foundation.

Build it strong. Protect it smart.
